HTC Touch HD vs iPhone 3G vs SonyEricsson XPERIA X1

Sep 23, 2008
As you might see, touchscreen phone interface is strongly making its way as the main control scheme in the majority of smartphones and even regular cell phones. While it was used in mobiles prior to iPhone, Apple showed the world that touchscreen interface can be used as an easy and original alternative to regular buttons. Even if you are an anti-Apple fanatic, it is hard to disagree that iPhone, with all its flaws, was a big step forward in user interface - with many other companies now adopting the same control scheme as iPhone's thumb control. The idea of using stylus as a needed part of interaction between user and his gadget becomes more and more outdated nowadays, with devices like iPhone approving that touchscreen can be controlled by only your thumbs, with no stylus at all.

Looking as Apple making step after step to dominate the market with its upgraded iPhone 3G, companies like HTC and SonyEricsson decided to renew their device lineup and to produce some interesting iPhone rivals. And while HTC already made many attempts to compete with iPhone with its Touch lineup, many of them don’t came even close to the iPhone. They lacked iPhone's sleek user interface, its big and bright screen and many more. Now, both HTC and SonyEricsson understood that to make a powerful iPhone rival they must focus on multimedia side of their devices. So, recent products from these companies, HTC Touch HD and SonyEricsson XPERIA X1, were made with all those things in mind. And in this comparison we would like to describe and compare all of those three touchscreen smartphones: iPhone 3G vs. HTC Touch HD vs. SonyEricsson XPERIA X1.

Appearence

Design is a very questionable point of comparison, but at least we can describe the exterior looks of these devices. All three phones were made in black colors, with iPhone you can choose between black and white back panels though. Sizes are almost completely the same, with X1 being the thickest (16.7 mm), iPhone 3G - tallest (115.5 mm) and Touch HD - widest (62.8 mm). HTC Touch HD is heaviest than others (146.4 g). Complete specifications are:

Touch HD - 115 x 62.8 x 12 mm; 146.4 g
XPERIA X1 - 110 x 53 x 16.7 mm; 145 g
iPhone 3G - 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm; 133 g

Unlike iPhone and HTC Touch, XPERIA X1 is a slider, with full QWERTY keyboard hidden under the screen. It is slightly curved when opened, no idea if this is only a design move or somehow improves usability. iPhone traditionally lacks any navigational buttons, so does the Touch HD. However, SonyEricsson devise has a full set of front buttons, which are shaped in triangles (somehow resembling Nokia Prism) - two soft keys, dial / reject, button for opening Start menu, Ok / close and navigational button in center.
Overall, all three smartphones look stylish and interesting, so it is only a matter of taste which one has better design.

Hardware

Competition gets harder when it comes to the hardware side. Let's begin from the part that is the biggest in all of these gadgets - screen. XPERIA has the smallest screen size - it is only 3-inched versus 3.5-inched iPhone screen and 3.8-inched screen of Touch HD. This is probably because XPERIA has many buttons on the front panel which took the useable space from the screen. Both XPERIA and Touch HD share the same WVGA resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, with iPhone in the back - its resolution is only 480 x 320 pixels. However, there is only a small difference in image quality, because of the same display physical size. On the Touch HD and XPERIA small fonts are more readable and picture looks sharper than on the iPhone - but in terms of colors and brightness they are almost completely equal. Needless to say, each phone supports wireless internet over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, 3G networks and they all has built-in GPS. Audiophiles will be happy to see that all of competitors have 3.5 minijack connector, so you can connect any type of headphones and listen to your favorite music in full quality. iPhone, just like all Apple products, lacks in FM radio support, which is present in both XPERIA X1 and Touch HD (RDS support included). Unlike XPERIA and Touch HD, iPhone has no ability to expand its memory with memory cards, so it is limited to its factory 8 or 16 GB. Touch HD and XPERIA has no such huge built-in storage capacity, but with microSD and SDHC support it is not a big issue - memory can always be expanded up to 32 GB. Among competitors, Touch HD has the most advanced camera - 5 megapixels with autofocus, XPERIA X1 has 3 megapixel camera, when iPhone's camera has only 2 megapixel resolution. When it comes to camera, iPhone's abilities are very limited - no video recording, no autofocus, only geotagging - feature, presence of which in XPERIA and Touch HD is still unknown. iPhone also has accelerometer and ambient light sensor - it is uncertain, do Touch HD and XPERIA X1 have those features (taking in consideration HTC Diamond had accelerometer, we consider that Touch HD will have it too, no word about XPERIA). Both XPERIA and Touch HD have 256 MB of RAM, which will be enough for multi-tasking and heavy applications, both have powerful processors - 528 MHz Qualcomm (Dual ARM cores) CPU. iPhone's hardware specs aren't so full, it is known that it is powered by 667 MHz ARM processor which is underclocked to increase battery life. So, iPhone may have more advanced hardware, but if it isn't used, who cares?

Software

Apple recently made a wise choice to allow its smartphone to launch third-party applications and games. However, users are limited with App Store support, so if the application is not in the App Store, there is no way to launch it on your iPhone except for hacking it out. Hacks are already available, being called "jailbreak", and they allow users to run any application they want without Apple's digital signature. This limits the number of apps, but there already is a big amount of them available, from service applications to fun games. XPERIA X1 and Touch HD both run on the Windows Mobile 6.1, which is an open platform and does not have any limitations - so you can easily code an app by yourself and launch it on your device with no worries. There already is a huge amount of WM applications and games, far larger than on the iPhone today. Although both devices are made on one version of Windows Mobile, their interface is completely different. HTC Touch HD uses TouchFLO 3D interface - made by HTC, it brings all needed functions in one place, and making controlling your device with fingers an easy task. TouchFLO debuted in first Touch model, and now it evolved in a big shell-like application that significantly increases usability of WM. SonyEricsson programmers also wanted to have some unique interface features, so they invented XPERIA - such name belongs to interface smartphone is using. Main feature of it is its ability to use panels, which are like several virtual desktops, and you are able to switch between them in any time you like, in a very interesting and eye-appealing method. It increases productivity, and removing the need in task manager - all those panels are like a different tasks launched and working simultaneously. Big amount of RAM and powerful CPU makes using this interfaces a snap, so in the battle of Touch HD vs. iPhone interface and XPERIA X1 vs. iPhone interface there will be no clear winner. Although changes made by programmers of both companies are significant, Windows Mobile remained an OS that is not very easily thumb-controlled. Many programs still require stylus, so you can't eliminate the need in this thing, no matter how good your shell is. In contrary, iPhone's version of Mac OS X is made especially for thumbs, so you will never need a stylus to work with this phone. Touch HD and XPERIA X1 come with a standard package of WM apps included, such as Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer and Office Mobile. Office Mobile, although quite limited, offer a possibility to view and edit your documents on the go. iPhone lacks in such activities, however, there is a chance of Office App available in the App Store - for a reasonable price of course. Multimedia capabilities of these devices is almost completely the same, they can play almost any type of media files. iPhone is more limited on this side due to close platform, there are plenty of players for Windows Mobile, with help of which almost every file format can be easily played. Also, Touch HD and XPERIA X1, thanks to their powerful CPUs, can play movies in the full resolution even without need to convert them into their native one - just copy it on the card and watch, so in a battle of these phones vs. iPhone this is a major advantage. However, iPhone has perfect iTunes integration, easily syncs with it and taking advantage of all features it has. Microsoft has made a Windows Media Player sync support for all Windows Mobile devices, but it is made too simple and has a limited abilities opposed to iTunes. In any case, Windows Mobile is more preferred mobile OS if you want a huge application base, open platform and good MS Outlook synchronization. In any other cases, if you are looking for a sharp user interface, complete thumb control and iTunes integration, the choice is simple - its iPhone.

Conclusions

Hard to say at this moment, how successful will these models be, from these three competitors only iPhone 3G already exists on the market. New devices from HTC and SonyEricsson are very interesting and curious, but there are strong suspicions that prices on them will be sky-high. iPhone isn't a cheap phone either, but it can be purchased with a cell phone carrier contract which make this phone times more reasonable in terms of price. In any case, the battle of iPhone vs. XPERIA X1 and iPhone vs. Touch HD will be tough, because they all have some advantages one over another. While iPhone bets on user interface and multi-touch, XPERIA X1 and Touch HD take advantage from Windows Mobile huge application base and open platform. Hard to say, which device is preferable, although Touch HD and XPERIA X1 have in our opinion far better multimedia potential - their huge screen and availability of multimedia applications make them a good choice for a portable multimedia center. Time will tell, how good they will be, so let's just wait until HTC and SonyEricsson finally release their devices to the public, to test them more closely.

Hi, im using Xperia X1 for 3 months and I hacked and change the OS to the HTC touchflo 3d and windows mobile 6.5, now my xperia is fast!!! and great customizable, good battery life and is stable, no crashes. I love is full keyboard and with opera and Skyfire browser is like a Mini Netbook!!!! I prefer Windows mobile for now because of the great apps database, later in some years from now i would move to Android Phones because i like more the linux base system than windows. If you want to upgrade your Xperia search "xperia Energy ROM xda developers"

I bought my Sony X1 the 1st week it debut in the US (unlocked). I bought it from an online store like I did with my other Sony Ericsson phones the P800 and P910i. Unlike the other phones, the structure of this phone is superior--others cracked LCD with the slightest touch. I was happy until 6-7months later. The phone's keyboard would repeat inputs several times or not work at all. Simple texts took several mins to get out. I was peeved but I managed. Behold, a few months after the program began to freeze. Had to physically take out the battery to get it to reboot (side note--the battery cover pops off with ease if you drop it but damn near impossible to take off manually with fingers). Now I'm having problems with the phone itself where if I was using the corded headset and remove it it still stays in headset mode. If I use bluetooth the phone turns the bluetooth off even when I have all functions set to continue. Finally today, Sat Jan. 10 2010 as I'm sending a text the LCD locks up. I can still type, I can scroll through programs, I just can't tap screen to initiate anything. I'm so disappointed with this phone and Sony and I'm gonna have to really have to increase my efforts to get a smartphone that does what it promises. This article is quite old, it'd be great if they updated it or give names of the new players for '10. Roll Tide Natl' Champs!

Hi, I've been using the Xperia X1 for just over a year now and I am still amazed at how much great free software is available that works with this handset. Maybe i am just lucky but I've had no problems with speed or crashes, it could of course be that I have an unlocked version with no carrier rubbish programmed into it, still I can't sing its praises enough, best handset I've had the pleasure to use. Like someone mentioned above if you just want to call and text and play the odd game iphone's your best bet but if you want more useful apps winmo is probably the best way to go... just my 2p worth.

i wold like to see ppl unlocking a nokia phone with a calculator in the iphone. on windows mobile i do this for some years now. you needed to receive a major update to os3.0 to get cut/copy/paste??? to get a gps compasss?
the iphone is such a good ipod with phone capabilities, my point of view! many years to come after you get a more usefull iphone than just a prety ipod that make calls. you have to buy a stilus, it doesn't even come with one... you don't need hey?? yaa, on windows mobile you need, for shure, but with that you can make things in the win mob that you cannot do in the iphone, like have a audio sequencer that has sintetyzers with knobs to do effects on audio your building on the win mob ppc. you have hand writing recognition, multitasking... its just too much to point out! yaa, its beautiful the iphone, so are the others. each with their own beauty.

I've had an Xperia and now have a Touch HD, the wife has an iPhone.
If you need the keyboard, get the Xperia, for me the screen size and lack of cracking means the HD wins it.
The wife loves her iPhone as it just works. It isn't easily customisable (as the others are), it doesn't get updated as much as the others (XDA developers), it's boring but it just works.
For me, I like being able to download new updated ROMs, having many more (often free) programs out there, the odd system freezing is the price I pay (not very often).
Comments like "iPhone is fun to use unlike other mobiles" show an ideal product for their target market, people that are too naive to realise there is anything else out there.
If you like continuous improvement and the ability to set up how you want it, go Windows Mobile, if you want marketing gimmick that just does the job and to be able to say 'I have an iPhone', don't.
I'd even go as far to say that more than half the iPhones out there are not used for more than phones and texting machines, (I probably got more out of my Nokia N73) but each to their own!

I have the touch HD and it's really great. The screen is pretty big and clear with huge resolution. However, the brightness is not that good, bad sun light legibility and not eye candy colors except if you were in a dark room than it'll be just fantastic. Battery life is good, call quality is great. I really recommend this device pals. But you have to put in minds, after all and no matter what htc try to improve the software, it stills a windows mobile device that sometimes may lack normal functions, like playing music while the device on standby mode!!!
Guess, with all respect, symbian platforms are the best.

Well, I have been an iPhone user and it has been amazing. iPhone is fun to use unlike other mobiles. You could spend your time playing games (apps). They are coming with the OS 3.0, So Yeah , we would see a great improvement in the software too! I have did quite a bit of research on Xperia coz I was going buy that one. The Xperia is said to have so many software issues. Bugs to be precise. Windows Mobile Always FAIL! Also hey, Sony Ericsson iDou would be challenge to all these mobiles. HTC Touch seems to be a good one as well.

I used all 3 phones, 1st with iPhone 2G & 3G, then SE X1, and now Touch HD. Touch HD is the best.

iPhone is good on multi-touch and screen response. Touch HD has great improvement in touch screen.

For ordinary user that need a phone only, go for iPhone. There are lots of free download which are of fun, though not quite useful.

For people like me that need use a lot on handset beyond phone should use Touch HD. There are many things cannot find in iPhone, e.g. bluetooth music, bluetooh beam file, video capture (need paid software), 5MB cam, sync task and notes with Outlook, Remote Desktop, FM Radio, Voice Command, replacable battery etc.

Memory is cheap but there is no way to have add-on to iPhone.

Browsing in Opera is better than Safari. Opera improved a lot such as zooming and compatibility in most webpages.

The screen on Touch HD is great, biggest in size and resolution compared with the other two.

Bluetooth connection to handfree is not sensitive in iPhone compared with Touch HD. Sony X1's bluetooth is crap. It will automatically turnoff in 10 mins that I cannot use it with my handfree while driving. Compliant to the Sony support centre is useless - no refund, and informed me that no firmware release yet (in Asia), though I learnt from newsgroup that it has fixes in Europe in Feb 09.

The idea of using "Panel" in Sony X1 is great, but the slow response and lack of new download is really disappointed.

I prefer the iPhone, touch-screen is much better than HTC HD, the only 2 things which are better in the HTC HD is the camera and the you Tube is faster, all other features are better in the iPhone 3G,

I agree with graham. Ramandeep must be wearing Apple Fanboy glasses...

1.Applications are great on Iphone? which ones... oh yeah.. the ones u have to pay for because it comes with nothing.

2.I'll give u the interface... but... no real bluetooth, no video camera, no videocalls, no pictures messages, no expansion slot... awesome!

3. Playing games is like the PSP... that is, of course, why you buy a iphone...

4.You can zoom on Safari! that must be an exclusive! you can't do that on Opera... or can you?

6. Great potential... no comment...

7. Clear and tidy... like the Touchflo 3D!

8. They all feel pretty much the same... u have to get used to it! All of them are actually pretty big...

The only thing i think that iphone really has that is better is that the touchscreen responds extremely well... but what for, if u are limited to a phone that does basically what any other cell phone has done for about 2 years now except make videos, send picture messages, use bluetooth properly, limited aplication... etc... etc...

But yeah... it will be improved in the future... but so will the other ones...
» posted by: Graham / Jan 04, 2009 06:12 PM
Ramandeep, that is hardly conclusive proof is it? All three devices have 'great potential', but then so did Betamax.

Have you even seen either of the other two devices?

As for improving the camera and bluetooth in the future, that sounds like they can make it better by bringing out a new updated device, is only Apple able to do this?

Sorry, it seems that you can't see beyond your Apple Fanboy glasses.

iphone is BETTER because :-

1. Applications are great .
2. Graphical user interface is extremely good .
3. Playing games on iphone is like playing on psp.
4. Browsing safari and zooming the pages is great.
5. Different GUI from all mobiles .
6. Great potential .
7. Clear and tidy .
8. Looks better and feels better in hands .

We know that iphone lacks behind in camera or bluetooth , but other points are great . These improvements can be made by apple in the future too . But iphone is still the KING .

Actually the Xperia DOES have only 256MB of RAM. The rest is allocated (128MB) to the graphics chip which sadly doesn't seem to be doing a great deal with it as the acceleration is not open to third-party developers. :-(

Probably mute as this article is out of date anyway but thought I would mention it.

hI, THERE IS AN ERROR ABOVE, XPERIA X1 ACTUALLY HAS 340mb of ram... think it may even be 360? i know it was upgraded in the latest edition because they thought the panels were too slow.
