The upcoming JavaOne event taking place on June 2 of current year is going to initiate one the most overwhelming changes in Java community. Let’s start from the very beginning. Sun Microsystems’ CEO Jonathan Schwartz has recently updated his blog with an announcement of their new idea. Project code named "Project Vector" was described there as an outcome from Sun’s cooperation with a search engine (they let us guess which one) and basing on the fact that biggest part of Java runtimes is not genuine and is developed by diverse product’s manufacturers - they have decided to start their own app store.I liked how Mr. Schwartz mentioned about how much profit they are looking forward to get. It was funny because just a day before I was watching Dirk Hohndel, Intel Open Source Chief Technologist, speaking about how open source is better over money and control gaining projects, but well these guys are selling hardware so both are right in their own way. Back to Sun, Project Vector is aimed to bond Java developers together, whether they are big companies or maybe even individuals, with army of Java users running into billion. The mechanism is simple – application that is on sale should be submitted to a specialized site, then a fee paid and that’s about it. Jonathan Schwartz also mentions that it is possible to promote for more advantageous position in the store by chipping in I guess. More on that only after June 2.
