Plants producing vertical Skyfarm

May 28, 2009
Taking into consideration constantly growing world population, UN is expected that within the next 30 years, there will be necessary 60% more food to satisfy ever growing world’s food demand. Here is a range of new possibilities for high technologies and designer Gordon Graff is trying to fill thus gap by offering new alternatives for food growing. Called Skyfarm, this appears to be a sky tower but it is designed for agricultural reasons.

This farm which is fixed in vertical position proves to be a very useful structure. Skyfarm produces plants are growing on special trays with nutrient-enriched water. Due to hydroponic agriculture, there can be satisfying yields with no more worries about infestation, diseases or climate dependence. With Skyfarm, it will be possible to produce sufficient amount of food for 50 000 people yearly using one Skyfarm’s acre.

Skyfarm is capable to produce food all year round what makes it an intelligent source of food production. Every year, it will be necessary to provide up to 82 million kwH for Skyfarm electricity. The important thing about Skyfarm is that it is self-sustaining. Electricity will be generated by methane being produced from a bio-gas plant installed in the Skyfarm.

The bio-gas plant will be working based on burning its own waste. The Skyfarm vertical farm for Toronto is not an innovation according to its designer, even having a futuristic look. There are 59 hydroponic plants floors but Skyfarm is not capable to be fully self-powered.
