What is the best ant killer? Ant killers are divided into two groups

  • Fast-acting sprays and powers that kill insects on contact, like Raid
  • Slow-acting poison that kills the entire colony in 2-3 weeks.

Among slow-acting products, entomologists and pest control specialists claim Spidosad, Indoxicarb, and Borox insecticides as the most potent to combat household and garden ants. These poisonous insecticides kill not only those insects in direct contact but also other colony members and queens.

The best way to combat crawling insects are traps — bait stations with poison hidden inside. Such traps attract insects. Ants eat the poison and share it with their counterparts.

Why shouldn’t you kill ants with a fast-acting spray?

The worst mistake of getting rid of ants is to kill ant foragers immediately when you see them. The entire colony hides inside its nest (there are typically thousands of ants in a settlement, including one or more egg-laying queens). That’s why killing the queen, which produces new generations, is the most crucial aim of destroying the whole ants’ colony.

Entomologists warn you shouldn’t kill foragers that you see in your kitchen because they bring poison to contaminate the entire colony.

The toxin doesn’t kill an insect instantly but allows it to interact with others, sharing poison, including the queen, and contaminate all of them within two or three weeks.

How Ant Bait Stations Work

I used ant-killing poisonous bait stations in my kitchen twice this summer. Once there were tiny black ants who came from the terrace. The second time, brown sugar ants appeared from the wall socket and moved straight to sweet cookies.

I used Bait Stations both times, and all ants disappeared within a week. It was a small infestation. I think they came from neighbors and didn't settle yet in our house.

If you need to leave poison in the cracks, behind the skirting boards, or on pipes and wiring, the best choice is a slow-acting Ant Killing Gel in the syringe applicator.

Be patient if you have had a big ant colony for over half a year. To kill a colony with more than one queen will take at least 2-3 weeks.

We have had five big ant colonies in our garden for many years. I plan to place ten bait stations this autumn. And then repeat in the spring to be sure all the ants' colonies are destroyed and all the queens are dead.

I don't recommend using fast-acting ant killers (sprays and powders) because they kill only visible insects and don't affect the colony and the ant queen. If you cannot stand and tolerate any kind of insects in your kitchen, you may once use a fast killer to kill visible ants. But then you should place Poison Bait Stations to destroy the entire colony and eliminate the queen.

Ants Killers for Outdoor Use

  • IGRs – Queen Sterilizers – the Insect Growth Regulator prevents a queen from producing new workers. But it is a prolonged process that takes around four months and sometimes may last up to a year, especially if the treated areas are large.
  • For wood-infesting insects like carpenter ants, termites, and carpenter bees, I recommend aerosol sprays that penetrate deep into the wood and work for up to one month. For extensive infestations – liquid insecticides are used.
  • You should apply granules outdoors to kill fire ants and destroy their mounds.

You may use Ant Killer Bait Stakes with Borax to combat household ants (acrobat, crazy, ghost, little black, odorous house, pavement, and other sweet-eating ants) outdoors. Apply these stakes near the perimeter of your home, especially near entrances where you think they may be getting inside.
