MP3 player in a cassette form

May 03, 2008
Gadgets are getting old in no time, and what today is called "amazing gadget" tomorrow will be ordinary, the day after tomorrow - old and outdated. The era of portable music player began with cassette tapes more than 20 years ago. Today, such things as "cassette players" are hard to find, they all gave up their positions first to CD players, now to more compact and modern MP3 players. However, car cassette players can be seen in many old cars, sometimes they are built-in, and sometimes car's owner does not want to spend couple of hundreds for a new audio system. Fortunately, there is a way to modernize such audio players without buying new ones. Just add one gadget, and it will be possible to play MP3 files on your old cassette player.

This gadget is known as Cassette MP3 Player. It is made in old and recognizable form of a cassette, and the good thing is, it can be inserted in your cassette player and it will play like an ordinary cassette! Only with one difference: music will be played from the SD card, which can be inserted into this gadget. The controls are simple - you press fast forward on your cassette player - the next song will be played, you press reverse - previous. Gadget is fully standalone; it has a audio output so you can use it like an original and unusual MP3 player if no cassette players are around. In addition, it has internal Li-Ion 450 mAh battery that is recharged through built-in USB port. Unfortunately, no SDHC support, so you are limited to 2GB of storage. In any way, it is WAY much bigger than an ordinary cassette can offer in terms of audio capacity.

This gadget can be a great choice if you want to give your old player a new life for a reasonable price. Ability to use gadget as a standalone MP3 player makes it more interesting to buy than regular tape-shaped gadgets with line input ports. This old-school MP3 player can be bought for /.99, which is much cheaper than new car MP3 player is.

My review of Cassette mp3 player

The good:
Can play mp3's in your cassette player.

The Bad:
No randomization + No memory of where you last left off = hearing the same few songs over and over.

Avoid this mp3 player. The missing features make this a waste of money. Yes it can play mp3's from your SD card on a standard cassette player, but this thing isn’t good enough. If this thing is going to look like a cassette, it should act like a cassette. What I mean is when I push the play button on my cassette player, it should immediately starts playing where I last left off. This thing can’t do that. In fact, it can’t turn itself on when you need it to start playing. The user has to manually turn on the unit, then put it back into the cassette player in order to start playing. This turns out to be a major hassle to have to deal with.

I bought this thing to play an audio book in my car. Without the last playback memory, I only hear the first chapter over and over.

The sound quality of this mp3 player isn’t bad at all. My mp3's sound pretty good thru this thing. Just don’t bother with the cheap ear buds they ship with the unit. They sound like listening to a speaker that is under a pillow - not very clear. My unit included a car charger and an AC to USB charger. The AC charger was useful and compact. The user’s manual that came with this thing wasn’t much, but enough to start things off.

The Equalizer feature on this thing is useless. The settings are normal, bad sounding, bad sounding in a different way, and really bad sounding. Keeping it on Normal is my advice. The odd thing is, if I press against the case just above the Equalizer button, it changes the Equalizer’s setting. I’m guessing this is a problem involving poor engineering.

The company that makes this unit is a mystery. There is no mention of who actually produces this mp3 Player. I found that to be very odd. It also makes obtaining support from the company impossible.

If you want a good, cheap mp3 player, look elsewhere.
