MIT gardening robot leaves nothing to do for farmers

Mar 11, 2009
Besides watering robot can also collect the fruits even so delicate as tomatoes.MIT students are again on their way to total optimization of divers and opposite paths to greater progress. Less than a month ago we were reviewing energy recovering shock absorbers also designed by a team of students from MIT and we liked a lot it’s uncompromising usefulness. Today we are taking a look at robots that came out of MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. They can no more or less take full care of a garden. AgBot from Louisiana State University could do similar stuff, but trust me on this - these are completely different leagues.

MIT’s robot has a lot more garden keeping abilities than any other robot before I believe. Even though it looks funny and pathetic with its duck walk, it has one of the most important features - mobility. Everything else is addible, but yet not any less impressing. This thing has a very advanced navigation systems. Pots are supplied with docking boxes robots are moving towards. Each one has its own signal and when it calls for the robot, it knows exactly which one needs its service. When to call and for what to call the gadget is also a part of the entire mechanism of close-to-autonomous greenhouse. This job was given to humidity sensors and chemical sensors. Different plants have different needs of water and nutrients so when sensor records parameters have dropped lower than the plant requires it calls for the robot. Besides watering robot can also collect the fruits even so delicate as tomatoes.

Guys from MIT say their gadget can significantly raise productivity because system excludes plant’s starvation or supersaturation. This, they say, can lead to lower costs and hand labour amount. Here is the question then: does that means farmers may loose their jobs? Because MIT robots always look complete and handy and this particular one doesn’t look like it needs more than one supervisor.
