Palm Topaz lands in March
Jan 19, 2011
HP Palm webOS tablet Just recently we have covered the information on Palm Topaz and Opal tablets were we suggested that while Opal is planned to launch on September 11, the Topaz might appear some time earlier. And we were right! As of today it is clear that Topaz will come round earlier, much earlier in fact. Designers had put last touches on it back in 2010 and now the Taiwan-based Inventec to which production is outsourced will start shipments in March. Right in time I should say: soon enough after February’s event and early enough before iPad 2 starts shipping, this might be good for sales.

Palm webOS Topaz and Opal tablets show up, disclose launch event
Jan 18, 2011
HP Palm tablet The Palm Topaz we have seen earlier last month makes another appearance this time. Well, strictly speaking we were only luck to its peripheral, but anyway, Topaz has shown itself and it haven’t come alone. As it turns out, HP will release two tablets this year under Palm brand with webOS onboard. We are already familiar with a 9-inch Topaz and in addition there will also be a smaller 7-inch tablet codenamed Opal. We already have some plausible release dates and bit of hardware specifications that can be found after the jump.

Samsung S52600 Star II will be launched in February
Jan 18, 2011
Samsung S5260 Star II The original widely spread Samsung Star is now aging seriously. To fix this, Samsung has prepared a successor. Samsung Star II has been leaving leakages here and there at the recent times and now we finally have an official word on its specifications and availability. Remaining a budget niche product, Star II model number S5260 will not get any version of Android as it could. Instead, designers have left it with the Samsung’s in-house bada core with TouchWiz UI on top of it by the looks of things. Probably to remain at low hardware requirements and keep a competitive price, though this is yet to be proved. Speaking of competition, Samsung Star II aims at social networking and comes with a fistful of respective clients and apps. A splash of specs is after the jump.

Toshiba Qosmio update for 2011
Jan 18, 2011
Toshiba dynabook Qosmio Toshiba has released some updates to its Qosmio notebook lineup. Quite a lot of updates actually. The newcomers include all-in-one PCs, high- and mid-range laptops and a netbook. The updates are based on either Intel Core i-series processors or driven by good old Pentiums. Some of the new models even feature 3D screens and WiMAX connectivity, more models have Blu-ray optical drives and/or terrestrial TV tuner. Unfortunately, not all of the specifications are available at the moment, but we have just enough of those to give you a taste of what Qosmio lineup will look like in the nearest future. Most of the new laptops come out later this month with Windows 7 Home Premium and a copy of Microsoft Office 2010 preinstalled. Check out the specs after the bump.

Green House USB 2.0 15.6" secondary monitor appears for $214
Jan 14, 2011
Green House USB 2.0 monitor The reason why USB 2.0 monitors have never really caught on is because the port’s bandwidth was never high enough for decent gaming frame rates and/or high resolutions. So with USB 3.0 gaining momentum I expected a lot of monitors to appear with support of the technology. And I still do, but in the meanwhile Green House releases a secondary monitor with USB 2.0 connection only. Does the fact that it is promoted as a secondary monitor means low frame rates will suit you fine? I don’t know, but there you go anyway. Specs are after the jump.

RIM news: 1,000,000 BlackBerry PlayBooks will be sold in Q1
Jan 14, 2011
BlackBerry PlayBook RIM and their BlackBerry PlayBook tablet they have recently previewed at CES 2011 has reportedly gone into volume production. Quanta Computer, the company to which production was outsourced, is planning on providing first shipment by the end of first quarter of current year. By that period RIM forecasts sales numbers as big as one million units outselling Xoom by Motorola. This, of course, will require a lot of effort from Research In Motion, namely providing capable operating system, app store and developer tools all of these activities have just been approved by RIM officials at the recent BlackBerry Developer Conference held in Bali, Indonesia. In the meanwhile the recently leaked Dakota smartphone will take care of sales in its segment.

BlackBerry Dakota picture and specifications
Jan 13, 2011
Blackberry Dakota Forget the CES 2011. BlackBerry moves on with its Dakota flagship. Anticipated since mid summer this full QWERTY touchscreen has been dropping leaks sporadically while RIM was developing OS 6.1 and other sorts of things Dakota features. So, time has come for it to show its face and not only that: full specifications are listed after the break. But before you reach there, I should say BlackBerry Dakota has already gained some feedback which is not entirely positive. So you might agree that Dakota is not very revolutionary spec-wise and its design is outdated. On the other hand it is also true that BlackBerry keeps evolving at a steady pace and delivers its functionality quite well.

Nexus S i9023 running Android 2.4 Ice Cream spotted in the wild
Jan 13, 2011
Nexus S i0923 running Android 2.4 Ice Cream I shall make a confession: the latest Android news have distracted our attention from where we actually are on the timeline. A sneak peek of Honeycomb which is version 3.0 has distracted us from the short-coming Android 2.4 Ice Cream. There is still a long way to the third generation, but 2.4 Ice Cream has already been spotted in the wild. The device was Nexus S model number i9023 aka BlackSilver. Only rumor mill can give an answer to how Nexus S i9023 is different from the original Samsung smartphone as well as what new features 2.4 Ice Cream carries up its sleeves. But we should find it all out soon, I guess.

iCapsule - a bigger and better iPad clamshell
Jan 13, 2011
Rocketfish iCapsule Tablet cases and keyboards (those for iPad in particular) is a deeply abundant market niche. Even today when second generation iPad is just around the band we still stumble upon new and better clamshells for the current iPad. Here is one. It’s from Best Buy’s Rocketfish and, before it took your interest, it is out of stock at the moment of writing. Anyway, iCapsule has a rather uncompromising solution to on-screen typing issue a full-size notebook Bluetooth keyboard which, unlike iPad itself, is ungraceful, but, as an iPad, it works. iCapsule provides both portrait and landscape orientation, two AA batteries and a hard carrying case with a handle for $100 but you can get it cheaper from Best Buy themselves.

Microsoft Surface 2 has AMD internals, bright future
Jan 10, 2011
Microsoft Surface logo 2007’s Microsoft Surface was in a class of its own. A first properly designed and built massively multitouch, if you allow me, 30-inch surface (sensitive to 52 simultaneous gestures compared to industry’s average 10) has now met its successor. Microsoft Surface in its second incarnation takes off right where the business was earlier left. So there are no radical changes in the concept, quite the opposite, Microsoft Surface 2 is the same thing built with modern tools and materials. By tools and materials I mean processor and graphics card both provided by AMD. Dual-core Phenom II clocking at 2.9 GHz and Radeon HD 6700M work in a beautiful tandem to fuel Samsung’s 40-inch 1920 × 1080 LCD. Happily enough the price is now down to $7,600. Microsoft Surface 2 runs Windows 7 and has WP7 support so there is really a huge potential to it considering applications it can run. The best experience though must be achieved with purpose-built apps so we will try to keep track of those.

iPhone 4 on Verzions CDMA network will be announced next week
Jan 09, 2011
Verizon CDMA iPhone 4 We are all eagerly anticipating next Apple event planned for the next Tuesday January 11 when reportedly iPad 2 is going to be announced. But not only that as it turns out. Verizon may also become the second US network dealing iPhones. iPhone 4 models to be precise as they will (expectedly) be specifically manufactured to operate on CDMA network. This is yet a question if Verizon iPhone 4 will support 4G network as well. My word is that it will not. I reckon Apple will add 4G support to iPhones of all models if there will actually be dispersion in the next generation, but I would gladly be wrong on this one. So far it is clear that Verizon iPhone will look the same and, of course, will not be the fith generation model as ones might have thought. At the moment we have only one remotely relevant proof that Verizon will get the iPhones: iPhone 3G S has just gone cheaper on AT&T.

Jan 06, 2011
Samsung external USB 3.0 HDD Data transfer is one of the narrowest bottlenecks that computer performance has to encounter these days. To address this, we have USB 3.0 technology that is about three-year old now, but a seizable growth of compatible devices was marked only last year. The top-end desktop-side lineup pictured on the left features up to 2 terabyte maximum capacity (1 TB and 1.5 TB options are also available), 256-bit Full Disk Encryption, backup software with automatic and continues modes, a couple of fancy glossy paints with wave patterns and USB 3.0 compatibility, of course.

Hacked Kinect does World of Worcraft
Dec 30, 2010
Microsoft Kinect Motion sensing systems in gaming is definitely a trend that will keep gaining its expansion in the recent years. There is a catch however. A lot of popular games nowadays are not prepared for this kind of input. Or at least out of the box they arent. Guys from USC Institute for Creative Technologies, have developed a Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit tastefully christened FAAST that, as shown in the video after the jump, hacks World of Warcraft into a dialog state with Microsoft Kinect. FAAST is will not only work with WoW, probably with some other MMORPGs as well but what are those games is yet unknown. So are developers plans on the toolkit apart from that by bringing motion control experience to already popular games they are looking forward to help people recover from physical disabilities or simply shape up. The bottom line so far is that you can play World of Warcraft on Kinect.

Samsung Galaxy Player is up for CES 2011
Dec 28, 2010
Samsung Galaxy Player Samsung is reportedly preparing a Galaxy Player for CES 2011 which is just round the corner. The upcoming Galaxy Player, as we have learned earlier this year, will not be the only media player Samsung plans to present next week at the exhibition, but the other YP-G50 is a bit short on specs next to the Galaxy Player model number YP-GB1. By the looks of things Galaxy Player inherits a lot of hardware components from the Galaxy S smartphone which is clever because all you have to do to design a multimedia player this days is take a GSM antenna out off a smartphone so its distribution wouldn’t face communication device licensing limitations.
