A real 360-degree holographic display

Aug 31, 2007
Reality makes one more step towards sci-fi movies with this creation. Researchers at USC have created a 3D holographic display that is able to show 3D pictures with no problem. The pictures can be seen from any angle. The device turned out to be not that complicated.

They used a spinning mirror that was covered with a special "holographic diffuser", a special DVI implementation, and a high-speed projector. All these components make 3D image possible for viewers.

The picture can be seen from any angle and any distance. It can project objects in different colors and works at 4320-5760 fps. The image can be pretty detailed at 768 x 768 pixels.

For now all we can do is get a holographic sight to immitate holographic view before the displays come out.

I don't know what is new or good about this. There are similar technologies or more interesting 3D products exist, for example.
..
..

I don't know how it works in this "new" technology because not much information provided in here, but surely it is quite similar to Perspecta Volumetric 3D display, which has a spin mirror as well.

I hope my contribution is not too unfriendly.

That's stupid.
Who wants an interactive mirror?
what about holographic images that are interactive and that actually float on the air.
I know it's a long way to it-
but when we get there....

yeah yeah ... I worked with a group at KU that did this 2 years ago, so sorry USC - you weren't the first. And unlike Star Wars, that rotating helical diffuser will chop your hands to bits if you try to touch the hologram. Shout out to Chris R and Chris G - the two other guys who know USC wasn't the first ... ;)

be one hell of a fast spinning mirror because it would need to be about 1800rpm motor exactly just to show it at realtime.

How exactly do you determine what it shows?

Shouldn't the resolution listing give 3 dimensions? Like 768x768x768?

I was waiting for the moment when they would do something like that. Imagine how far the television can go now when this technology has appeared. We'll see...

I love how they used a TIE for the example
