40 Gbps - Fastest Internet Connection to a Single Home

Jul 13, 2007
75-year old Swede has recently got a 40 Gbps internet connection directly to her home computer. She is a mum of the internet legend Peter Löthberg and they have got money and technology to make a connection like this. She decided to persuade internet operators to invest in faster internet connections.

We used to see those optical fiber links and their speed used to be enough. Now when I heard about this I want such a connection. I would feel like I can download all the internet data in just seconds. Well, I am just joking but it is really fast. Imagine she can download a full HD DVD in just 2 seconds.

My SATA II hard drive speed is just 3 Gbps I can't imagine how a home internet speed can be faster than my hard drive. It is a good thing that RAM is still a bit faster though.

The secret that stands behind this speed is in new modulation technique. This technique allows data to be transferred to de distances up to 2,000 kilometers directly between only two routers. This does not involve any intermediary transponders which makes the connection even faster.

Of course now you've got to get a high quality fiber optic cable to be able to get such speed. Moreover it will surely cost a fortune to get 40 Gbps internet connection.

"If this real that would be the equiv of 4 OC 192's. Not only that you have to have something that is capable of concatonating it. I work in fiber and so far I have never heard of anything like that."

lol, it is also the equivalent of 768 OC-1s.... Kind of like a dollar is the equivalent of 100 pennies. My point is, why not just call it the equivalent of one OC-768?

quote "COMMENT: Even if your driving a Ferrari, the road's speed limit is just around 70 MPH. Get the metaphor? A 40GBPS is useless if the net and it's users run at around 10 MBPS to 1GBPS. It's a wasted investment.
= Idiot

Ever heard of P2P ? Maybe torrents?
You should look it up if not.
If 1000 people have an internet connection of 1mbp/s and I have a connection of 1000 mbp/s then I would be able to max out my connection by downloading from everyone at the same time. "

mate ur a bloody idiot. there is alot more that comes into play. All the routers that the packets have to go through to be routed to the correct IP destination can cause delays. If the router can only transmit at 10mb/ps then that will reduce the time. So no u will nver be able to max out download speed. And for u dumbshits 40gb/ps mean 40 gigabits per second not gigabyte

wow that is crazy a 40gb/ps wow i would love to have that geez im only on an 8mb connection which i only can get a speed test of 1mb geeeeeez thats good, but as people have said it would be hard to download that fast as everyone isnt that far ahead in technology, ive read this on many blogs, bu what would a 75 year old do with a fast connection, download games??? host servers no i dont think so, this is a little bit of money lost id say

what if im driving a Mercedes in the fast lane
and theres a Lamborghini driving up my ass
could i over take the citron to my left?????

citrons are very eco friendly cars.
get my point we need eco friendly wires!!!! gosh.

but seriously stop quoting the car metaphor its getting old.

p2p or torrents would never be that fast.
Plackard is right, but his analogy was bad.

A Ferrari can drive faster than what the speed limit signs specify, but it will still be physically limited on what it can do to get around the other cars on the road.

This connection is capable of sending and receiving small packets from RAM at max speed, anything else is going to be physically limited by the slowest components on the computer itself.

vijaykumar your torrent connections are still going to be limited to what your hard drives are capable of sustaining. Not to mention the overhead caused by you actually trying to use the computer at the same time.

Plakard is right. If the a hard drive, for example, can only write at 3Gbps, you can't load information to it at a faster speed. 40gbps will always be capped at a small fraction of it's speed.

I heard that Optical Fiber can give you up to 10 Gbps and that's it. Maybe they have got 4 of those.

yeah this is definetly possible they use light/laser beams to transmit through the firbre optics its a simple practise i done it in physics

Perfectly possible. Though only for a select few right now, not average home users. I work in the telecom industry and my company ran tests on 40Gbps - 400Gbps hardware as far back as 2000. They actually pumped over 400GB twice from England to New York in slightly under 3 seconds! :-)

But... as I said, this is specialist stuff... not for home users.
