Hackers got shell access on iPhone

Jul 07, 2007
iPhone got hacked for shell access by hackers only a week after its official release. It didn't take them long to enable shell access to iPhone. There is not much problem to do that as appeared and all closed iPhone can soon be not as closed for installing applications. A home made gadget made it possible to connect iPhone to a PC.

It is not that difficult to hack something that you can connect to with no problem. iPhone has got a 30 pin connector dock with the same pinouts as iPods have and it was not much trouble to put together a resistor, ground and RS-232 level converter. This ensures connection to the iPhone

All you got to do next is enter some commands using iPhone interface and that is it. The hack enabled some features like TFTP which could allow installing software. Those actions will bring a boom into iPhone society that wants to add some applications to their favorite and very expensive cell phone.

Shell features are pretty basic besides having TFTP function and will not bring much use to the clients. However, it is a step forward in creating an open powerful cell phone with a touchscreen.

By the way if you haven't bought an iPhone yet you can do that at AT&T but they don't have much 8GB version as they were the most popular ones. I myself would better wait until the heat cools down and would get one not standing in a queue.
