8.5 GB single-sided DVD by Victor

Jul 04, 2007

While HD DVD and Blu-ray are fighting each other with new technologies and new expenses for us usual users a Japanese company Victor has created a new gadget. We did not see it coming but it is here. The new technology presents us a usual DVD disc that can fit up to 8.5 GB on one side and makes the disc two-sides so that you can record on both sides of the DVD.

Victor has designed its own DVD-RW format in order to fit up to 17 GB on just one DVD. The problem was that there are two layer discs that fit up to 9 GB but they could not be two sides. They are resolving that problem and promise that two-sides two-layer discs will be available in august.

With Victor’s technology Two-sided, two-layer discs are being produced now, this way you can record up to 17 GB of data on just one DVD without buying any additional hardware.

It is not as much as HD DVD’s 3 layers on each side by 15 GB each which makes it total of 90 GB and definitely not as much as Blu-Ray’s 8 layers on one side with 25 GB per layer, but its main advantage is that you don’t need new hardware to use those. HD DVD and Blu-Ray Drives a somewhat expensive and I would use Victor’s HD- DVDs for now.
