Our laptops will work more on one charge soon

Jun 06, 2007
Laptops generate a lot of heat when they work. Finally we can take advantage of that and convert heat energy into electricity using these new gadgets. Thermoacoustic engines have been created by Orest Symko and his students at University of Utah. So now heat generated by our devices can be used to make electricity.

This research has been funded by army; I wonder what advantage will they have with that technology. Oh, well it is not for me to decide.

Anyway Thermoacoustic Engines produce sound when they are being heated. They produce very much noise for now. An engine of half a size of a penny was making a noise of 120 (not less than a siren) dB and the bigger one gave out a noise of 135 (and that's a jackhammer's noise equivalent).

They expect that the sound they make can be converted back to electricity and return it to the battery of laptop for example. However, they still make noise; and the scientists hope that smaller versions of engines will work at ultrasonic frequencies not to bother you.

However, they will not make your laptop cooler in any way; they will just bring some part of energy back to its batteries. A very small part of energy will be brought back of course.

We will be looking forward to see this technology coming. However, don't expect it to come anytime soon those are just experiments.
