The gadget itself represents a tube with 2 components: a sensor at the tip of a probe and a digital circuit housed in a pod. The sensor starts measuring the electrical resistance of the environment every second when you place it in the soil, with lower resistance indicating higher levels of moisture. The results are interpreted by the digital circuit which either remains dormant or starts remitting blinking patterns.
When there is no blinking at all it means that the plant has sufficient moisture. When it starts blinking it means that the soil is dry and needs water.
A double blink with a long pause says that the soil is completely dry. A slow triple blink with a long pause alerts you about a low battery power or a bad switch contact.
