Use the power of wind to wind up your gadgets

Apr 07, 2008
Every now and then appear new ways to charge your gadgets with alternative sources of energy. Usage of energy of sunlight and mechanical energy are the most popular methods to utilize the ecologically pure ways of producing electricity for powering gadgets. There is a plenty of solar batteries and foot-driven generators, sized from a small portable device to a huge 10 kg case. However, why other sources of free energy are not used? Like the power of wind, for example? This gadget charger was designed to correct that mistake.

HyMini looks like a fan, although it operates quite in the opposite way: it produces energy when the wind is blowing. A small turbine is used to capture wind power, and the generator inside converts it into the electricity, powerful enough to charge modern gadgets, like cameras, PDAs and cell phones. The device itself has a plenty of ports for many charging devices, so you will be able to connect all of them at once. The ideas of using the wind power is great, but let us look from practical point - it needs a constantly blowing wind to operate, and the wind speed must exceed 9 mph. While the mechanical based generator needs only your force to generate electricity, this one will not be satisfied with the power of your lungs - so it is unusable when it is a clam and windless day. More than that, it will not hold up if the wind speed is exceeding 40 mph, which makes attaching it to the car completely useless. Therefore, its main use is windy areas, where the wind constantly blows in one direction.

There is a point, why there are so much portable solar generators in comparison with other generator devices. The portable wind generators are very uncomfortable in comparison to solar ones; they suffer from many limitations and need specific conditions to operate. While the price of 50$ can seem interesting, it is better to think twice before purchasing such unpractical device.
