Ten students from TU Delft teamed up to engineer a hybrid of an aircraft and a sailboat. The result is a green kooky vehicle titled Hydro Kite that is surpassing our imagination. This sustainable bad boy is supposed to be powered just by the power of wind and incorporates a kite, a keel and a cabin. This whimsical concept features 157 meters 2 huge kites flying which are expected to fly above the Atlantic and power this unimaginable vehicle by means of wind energy. The futuristic cabin is going to be floating in the sky at the height of 15 meters above the Atlantic.
This marvelous two-seater includes special amenities designed for food and restroom to make your flight as comfortable as possible. In addition to that, the steering is provided by the aircraft shaped keel designed to be sailing several meters below the surface of water.
The keel is planned to weigh 66 pounds, which is around 2 meters in length along with the same width for a wingspan. This ecologically conscious vehicle is made of glass reinforced plastic resembling us a traditional aircraft including a rudder and its tail.
Shaped like this, this green flying object makes it easier to maneuver while its keel prevents the kite from colliding with cabin. The wind powered Hydro Kite is scheduled to sail from New York to Cornwall, England reaching its top speed of 90 kilometers per hour. The travel is expected to last four days and an hour.
This environmentally friendly wind powered vehicle concept could be an ideal replacement for gas consuming aircraft but at the same time a lot of revamping still needs to be done before its production phase. With such a clean and green concept, hopefully we have a brighter future to have less pollution and more technical revolution.
The work on the concept design is still under way with a one time astronaut Wubbo Ockels to manage the project. To be capable to set this monstrous vehicle in motion, wind should be a strong as 100 meters per second to give you a new sky surfing experience.
