Cognitive Aid System for blind and visually impaired people

Jul 10, 2009
For all those who visually impaired, here is a good piece of news. This novel gadget called Cognitive Aid System is specifically designed for blind or visually impaired people offering a conceptually new “vision”. That said, this smart prototype system makes it possible to see the objects with sound.

The CASBliP prototype functions using lasers along with digital video images in order to produce three-dimensional acoustic map to be able to show the world once it is transmitted through headphones. Once the digital video images are captured, the data can be easily analyzed so as to detect the distance of objects which is just ground breaking.

The spatial data will be offered to the user by means of headphones. As soon as the signals are captured, the smart device will assist its users and navigate them while keeping free from obstacles. The user will have to wear special glasses coming with included mini camera. Keeping out of obstacles is now easy, as you could clearly know when there is an object in front of you.

For instance, approaching an object will increase the sound while moving away from an obstacle will reduce the sound. If there is an object on your right, you will be alerted and be able to stay away from the object. This clever system is able to predict movement while used algorithms and real-time images allows detecting street objects.

Its gyroscopic sensor identifies the way the user moves his or her hand so depending on your head position there will be the relative position of sound. By now, there are 2 prototype electric devices installed on a helmet which appear to be tested in real time. The first one is M1 which applies a laser sensor primarily designed by Siemens to be used for detecting passengers in cars.

People that surround you will not be able to see the system since it is visible via glasses which uses infrared light. The second device called M2 features 2 digital video cameras being placed on both sides of the helmet. The system happens to be able to predict and identify objects motions. So the main idea of this intelligent gizmo was to make it possible for impaired people to navigate safely and independently.

The system is capable of processing the images to adapt the vision in higher contrast based on user’s visual abilities. This fabulous gadget turns out to be very useful for blind or partially sighted people making their lives full of their own decisions making.
