Camarillo’s 21st green houses – eco-friendly farming

May 15, 2009
Have you ever thought that it would be possible to produce 20 times fruits on an acre basis than regular farms? Taking into consideration the fact that the land is limited, such constructions prove to be very important and useful in a new ear of sustainable technologies. Greenhouse agriculture is more than necessity in a highly population growing world.

With a Canadian farming company Houweling Nurseries who designed high technology green houses being operated by renewable energy, it now seems to be possible to protect our planet from being polluted with carbon dioxide. The facility is the million complex with its own ecosystem and a perfect environment conditions.

The complex is composed of five acres of solar cells to provide 2.1 megawatts of power operating along with and climate control systems. Camarillo’s 21st green houses are believed to be the world’s first energy neutral green houses. There is a four acre pond with rainwater for irrigation. Solar heat is collected by thermal systems.

Plants or whatever you are going to grow will have no herbicides with hardly ever presenting pesticides while plants are fed due special tubing. There is a restricted use of fertilizer as well due to absence of dust in the green house. Fertilizer is finally decreased by half. There are 450 w0rkers inside 20 acres facility, making sure everything is well operated.

The very interesting approach is the presence of its bumblebees for pollination reasons. These are going to be only sustainable products with a new trend to lead a healthy style of life. The water collected, condensed, filtered as well as get back to the green houses to ensure fruitful crops. Such a technology allows saving more than one-fifth of what is needed in regular farming.

Camarillo’s 21st green houses are believed to be profitable with all the expenses being covered after 10 years of hot house’s exploitation. The amount of generated electricity is enough to supply 1 500 homes. The project was designed by Kubo Greenhouse Projects. The farm operates with both a temperature and a humidity control, making it possible to harvest 482 tons of tomatoes from one acre.

The interesting fact is that plants stay alive for a longer period than it happens in the field, so they are being replaced every six months. Having more than 300 days of sunshine every year, the green houses seem to be a perfect facility for all-year crops while being an absolutely sustainable farming facility.
