Laser LightLane eases bicyclist's life

Jan 16, 2009
LightLane by Altitude Inc.Bicycle is the answer to several modern life issues. The most obvious one for the end-users is of course costs. Bicycles are much cheaper than cars as they are not so complicated, don't have to pay fees as they enter city centers and don't use any kinds of fuel. They are more mobile than cars or public transport as they don’t get stuck in traffic jams and are emission free. However, many citizens, who are currently using bicycles everyday, say that they will buy a car as soon as possible because they want to travel in more comfortable way and they want to feel themselves safer. The last issue is now one more step closer to its final solution. The LightLane concept provides rider with some extra space and outlines him with a virtual bike lane.

Altitude Inc. designed a gadget that is attached to the bike and is equipped with a number of lasers. Lasers draw shape of the bike lane on the road. Such a way rider is now visible in the dark and drivers will probably not brake into his own space. Red lines on the road also look nice but how helpful are they? Laser light will probably grow dim in the lights of a vehicle or street illumination. If we dive into Highway Code, we find out that bicyclist is a participant of the road traffic, which means he can use a full lane. Why to bother with gadgets and confuse drivers in this case? Anyway, if LightLane helps to avoid accidents on the road, it will by highly appreciated. LightLane shouldn't be an expensive device, so why not to reinsure then?

I can imaginb every person in the world using one of these, and It would be annoying... In fact it is against the law for cars to have lights on the bottom of thier doors.. so why would it be ok for bikes to shine things on the street. If you get hit and live then sue the person. But if you get hit and you are using this device. Can you sue????

Great idea! As a scaredy-cat rider in L.A., I am going to look into this further. Another safeguard when venturing out on two wheels after dark.

i think you are really running too far with that idea, if you rode a bike to commute on a busy street everyday this makes sense, as about 70% of all drivers think they own the road they way they pass so close and do stuipid things to squeeze you as far over to the right as possible, or cut you off, if there was an indicator to point out to the less kind that there is actually a legal space in which a cyclist is allowed legally to occupy on the road it may save a life or 2, i think it's a great idea, if i could find one i'd buy one!

I question the legality of using this product on public streets. Shining lasers in and around the street may be illegal in and of itself. painting your own lane maybe scoffing at traffic laws. if this were legal, then any vehicle on the road can use lasers to paint their own lane or symbols around their car. Can you imagine if EVERY car, bike, motorcycle, pedestrian on the road used one of these?
